REAL Women of BC goes to Victoria
The federal liberals and the childcare advocates are hopping mad as Prime Minister Stephen Harper is taking a different route regarding childcare. Instead of a bloated, health care type approach, our Prime Minister plans to give some money back to the parents and allow them more choice in who cares for their children. Although the planned $1,200 per child per year for the parents is not exactly a lot of money, it is a step in the right direction.
REAL Women of BC felt that it was necessary to keep the momentum going and to inform our provincial government that the majority of parents did not want a one-size-fits-all, government funded-, controlled-, and run daycare plan and that Prime Minister Stephen Harper was on the right track. A couple of the board members met with MLAs, discussing the daycare issue. Out of one of those meetings came an invitation to attend the Caucus Outreach of BC Liberal Party in Victoria and do a presentation on this issue. Laurie Geschke and Doris Darvasi put together a brief on daycare funding, travelled to Victoria on March 1, and gave a power point presentation to the members of the caucus. There were approximately l6 MLAs present. After the presentation, there was a question period.
A copy of the brief was given to all the Caucus members even those who were unable to attend the meeting. The caucus members have discussed the issue, and will present their recommendation to either the Premier or the Minister in charge of childcare. |
