R-Rated Movies Ads Target Young Teens
A study by the Parents Television Council (PTC) shows that nearly one out of four film ads shown during the family hour are for r-rated films. Adult entertainment is marketed to children. PTC found that out of 3603 ads for adult type movies, nearly a quarter (23%) were aired during the family hour. Networks such as UPN, NBC, and FOX were responsible for the most ads. Others were CBS, ABC and WB. Many parents carefully screen what their children are watching on television just to be inundated with TV ads for adult type movies.
One such movie is 8 Mile, an R-rated movie featuring the vulgar rap star Eminem. The ads are on such favourite teen shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, That 70s Show, The Bernie Mac Show and Half and Half. Teenagers are exposed to an avalanche of ads for these adult movies and then try all kinds of things to be able to go and see these movies. Parents need to check more than just what television programs their children watch. Now they have to check the ads as well.
