BCTF Sponsors Public Input

According to an article in the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Times of January 17, 2003, the B.C. Teachers Federation is sponsoring a panel to tour British Columbia for public input for the creation of a School Charter to be published by the Spring of 2003. The committee is comprised of an Anglican priest, a former union boss, a former tribal-leader, a former superintendent of schools and a parent of a special needs child. The committee will consult about 30 communities throughout British Columbia. Rev. Margaret Marquardt, an Anglican priest who is the chairperson of the committee, says that it is important to get public input as we are at a “crossroads” in education. She further states that the panel wants the public to be “creative” in their input and are particularly welcoming the input from children and youth.

Those that are interested in participating in these discussions can get further information on times and places by phoning 604-874-5030 or by e-mail to charter@publiced.ca.

It is interesting to note that the BCTF is sponsoring this event and is planning to write a Charter for Public Education. If anyone should hold hearings it should be the Ministry of Education. Can the public expect an unbiased School Charter?
