Video Games for Christmas Gifts?

Though some parents believe videogames are harmless entertainment for kids, recent studies show that not only are some games violent or sexually explicit but that they are often designed for adults.

The Entertainment Software Association estimates that the average age of a game player is now 29 years old and 39% of such players are women.

Some games feature lesbian kissing (The Matrix), or decapitating a policeman with a shovel (Postal 2), or nudity (BMX XXX). To try to ensure children are not exposed to adult content, some video games are rated. The scale is E for everyone aged 6 and older, T for Teen 13 and older, M for Mature (aged 17
and older) and A for Adults only - games with sex or violence ( for those 18 and over) Parents can also consult the Entertainment Software Ratings website to ask about content of a particular game (www.esrb.com)

However some commentators such as video game journalist Marc Saltzman simply
recommend parents play the game with the child and watch the child playing it to actually find out what it is like.
